Scale on Hydrangea

So I found a whole lot of fuzzy squashy white things on the hydrangea yesterday. Bleugh!
A quick Google tells me that it is Scale. Not seen this before, so what is the most effective way to deal with this?

Also, do birds pick it off to eat? Sorry if that is a stupid question, but the local sparrows won’t leave the hydrangea alone at the minute!!

It might be mealy bug or woolly aphid rather than scale. It’s good to post pictures then we can double check

I’d say wildlife will eat them, if sparrows are nosing around they’ve probably already been eating them. I wouldn’t worry too much unless they’re causing a decline in health on the hydrangea.
