Although the cherry tomatoes I’ve grown taste delicious the skins are always too thick, regardless of the variety. Apart from choosing a thin-skinned variety (Sungold?), is there anything else I should be doing?
Hi Sue! I think beyond the variety, the skin is affected mainly as a reaction to the plant trying to retain moisture. So lack of water, particularly dry, hot weather - these would all cause the plant to form thicker skins on the fruits. Watering more or, if you have them in a greenhouse, shading them a bit during the hottest sunniest days might help, if you haven’t tried any / all of these things?
Thanks Jack, I’ll give it a go. I’m trying to remember what dry hot weather feels like!
It does feel like a distant memory!
