Allotment Fruit Trees

I’d really like to plant a couple of cordon apple and pear trees along the side of my allotment.

Is this a good idea? I’m slightly worried that the area beneath them will be very dry. Also I’m guessing they’ll need to be on dwarf rooting stock, and does anyone have any recommendations for good varieties?

Thanks!

I grow apple trees on mm106 rootstock, i have poorer soil and think a stronger rootstock makes a hardier apple tree. Local knowledge is a good thing. Ask your fellow allotment folk.

It will be fine, I grow stepovers at the end of my beds. It’s a good idea to give their roots some space though as the trees will need water and nutrients too. For varieties I would ask around locally too, those that do well depend a lot on local conditions.
